Whitespotted bambooshark (Chiloscyllium plagiosum)

Andy Cornish gained his doctorate from the University of Hong Kong on the fish assemblages inhabiting shallow coral communities in Hong Kong. Curiously, he still enjoys diving in Hong Kong and has recently co-produced (with Dr. Y. Sadovy) the first comprehensive and colour guide to the 'Reef Fishes of Hong Kong'.

On 04 May 2000, a 'Whitespotted bambooshark', Chiloscyllium plagiosum (Bennett 1830), one of two bamboosharks known from Hong Kong SAR waters was found in the shallow coral community of Bluff Island (Sha Tong Hau) near Sai Kung. The shark grows to about 95 cms in length and was seen resting amongst coral outcrops at a depth of 4 m. This family of nocturnally active sharks feed on small benthic invertebrates and fishes.
This shark is rarely seen by divers in HK waters, however Andy Cornish was fortunate enough to photograph it for his first time.

Using a Nikon F90X in an Ikelite housing, a single Ikelite 100A Substrobe and Sensia 100 slide film the shark was close to its maximum size and is harmless.

Blue Shark
(Prionace glauca)

Pui Ling Ho is a Senior Consultant with Atkins China Ltd., and she has been diving for over 5 years. Pui has recently returned from PNG where she took some fabulous shots of Grey Reef Sharks.
Whilst cage diving off San Diego on April 16 2000, Pui Ling Ho took this photograph of a Blue Shark (Prionace glauca). Nearly 12 miles offshore and hanging in the deep Pacific Ocean, she photographed a number of these pelagic sharks swimming past. The Blue Shark is found throughout the open ocean in tropical and cooler seas. Growing to a maximum length of 3-4 m, they feed mainly on squid and mackerel.

Using a Canon Sureshot A1 and Kodak Ektachrome E100 VS slide film on auto setting, Pui waited for the ideal moment to take this photograph; the shark coming straight in and slightly above her.

Sand Tiger Shark

Tim Clements of Blue Planet Aquariums (UK) filmed this amazing sequence of a Sand Tiger Shark being hand fed at the Deep Sea Leisure Aquarium based near Ellesmere Port (UK). Through his multi-media consultancy Anableps Media Tim specialises in underwater videography and video graphics.
